When CloudConvert is the better choice

When CloudConvert is the better choice: if you need a rare or exotic format among its 200-plus options, or a quick one-off conversion with nothing installed, CloudConvert's breadth and browser convenience are hard to beat. Omit Convert is for the common formats you use daily when the file is sensitive enough that uploading it, even to a service that deletes it within a day, is not acceptable.

Switching to Omit

For everyday conversions of confidential files, point them at Omit Convert instead of uploading. You keep local processing and gain a metadata scrub, and can still reach for CloudConvert for an unusual format.

What we checked, and where it came from

Checked against CloudConvert's published privacy policy on the date shown. They are unusually clear about their retention, which makes an honest comparison possible.

Verified 23 July 2026.

Uploaded files are deleted within 24 hours

CloudConvert states that uploads are automatically removed after 24 hours at the latest, and files are transmitted over secure connections. For a cloud converter that is a reasonable policy, clearly stated.

CloudConvert privacy policy

Request metadata is retained for 180 days

Browser type and version, operating system, referrer URL, IP address and access timestamps are kept for 180 days, stored separately from other personal data. Your file goes in a day; the record that you converted it stays for six months. For most work that is fine. For a document whose existence is itself sensitive, it is the detail worth knowing.

CloudConvert privacy policy

The file still has to leave your machine to be converted

That is inherent to a web service and not a criticism of their engineering. But it means a conversion is a disclosure, and for regulated material a disclosure needs a basis and possibly a processing agreement. Omit Convert removes the question by never transmitting the file.

How local conversion works

Choose Omit when

Choose Omit Convert when the file itself is confidential, when your policy or regulator does not permit uploading client material to a third party, or when you also want metadata scrubbed in the same pass.

Choose CloudConvert when

Choose CloudConvert for breadth. It supports far more format pairs than we do, needs no installation, and handles occasional conversion of non-sensitive files better than a desktop tool would.

Questions people ask

Does Omit convert as many formats as CloudConvert?

No. CloudConvert's 200-plus formats are a real strength. Omit Convert covers the common document, image, audio, and video formats most work needs, without uploading anything.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Omit converts entirely on-device. CloudConvert uploads files to its servers and deletes them within 24 hours; Omit never sends them at all.

What does the metadata scrub do?

It removes embedded metadata, such as author, device, and location details, as part of the local conversion, so the output file does not carry hidden identifying information.
