Omit Redact vs Adobe Acrobat

Omit RedactAvailable now

Acrobat is how most people redact a PDF, and its redaction is real: applying it removes the underlying content rather than covering it. The differences are what gets found automatically, what the licence costs, and whether the tool covers anything that is not a PDF.

When Adobe Acrobat is the better choice

Acrobat is a better PDF application than Omit and is not trying to be a PII engine. If you already pay for Pro, your redaction is genuine, your metadata gets swept, and you are on a Mac, there is no reason to move for occasional work on known patterns. Omit earns its place when the thing you cannot do by pattern is the thing you need: finding the names, addresses and organisations nobody can write a regular expression for, on a machine with no network, without a subscription.

Switching to Omit

Nothing to migrate. Keep Acrobat for editing and signing, and run Omit over the file first when the sensitive content is people rather than card numbers. Omit writes a separate output file, so the copy Acrobat holds is untouched.

What we checked, and where it came from

Plans, prices and the redaction tier gate were read from Adobe's own pricing page on the date shown. Pricing moves, so treat the figures as of that date. Feature behaviour was checked against Adobe's own redaction documentation rather than third-party summaries.

Verified 17 September 2026.

Redaction is a Pro feature, not a Standard one

Adobe's plan comparison lists redaction under Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Studio and not under Acrobat Standard. Prepaid annual pricing is 179.88 US dollars for Standard, 239.88 for Pro and 299.88 for Studio, so reaching the redaction tool costs 60 dollars a year more than the entry plan.

Its automatic detection is pattern-based, and the pattern list is short

Search and Remove Text can sweep a whole document for phone numbers, Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, email addresses and dates. That covers structured identifiers properly. It does not cover names, street addresses, employers or any other identifier that has no fixed shape, which in most real documents is the majority of the problem.

Adobe, how to redact a PDF

Acrobat sweeps hidden data, and Omit does not

Remove Hidden Information finds metadata, hidden text, comments and attachments, which is a real capability with no Omit equivalent. We would rather name it than let you find out from a document properties dialog after sending the file.

What redaction actually means

Choose Omit when

Choose Omit Redact when the identifiers you need gone are people, places and organisations rather than card numbers, when the file cannot leave the machine or the machine has no network, or when you want one policy covering spreadsheets and images as well as PDFs.

Choose Adobe Acrobat when

Choose Acrobat if you need a real PDF editor, if you are on macOS, if hidden-data sweeping matters more than automatic detection, or if you already pay for Pro and your redaction work is occasional and pattern-shaped.

Questions people ask

Does Acrobat actually remove the text, or just cover it?

It removes it. Applying a redaction in Acrobat deletes the underlying content, which is why the operation asks you to save. The tools that only cover text are the annotation and drawing tools, in Acrobat and everywhere else, and that is the mistake behind most recovered redactions.

Can Acrobat find names automatically?

No. Search and Remove Text works on text you supply and on a fixed set of patterns: phone numbers, Social Security numbers, credit cards, emails and dates. A person name has no pattern, so finding those is manual. That is the gap Omit is built for.

Is redaction available in the cheaper Acrobat plan?

No. Adobe lists Redact in Pro and Studio but not in Standard, so the redaction feature sits behind the 239.88 US dollars a year tier rather than the 179.88 one.

Does Omit clear document metadata like Acrobat's Remove Hidden Information?

Not today. Omit redacts page content and verifies it, but it has no metadata sweep, so author names and document properties are not cleared for you. Acrobat genuinely wins that row, and if hidden data is your risk you should run its Remove Hidden Information pass.
