Omit Redact vs Foxit PDF Editor

Omit RedactAvailable now

Foxit is the established Acrobat alternative and it offers two different redaction paths: manual redaction in the desktop editor, and Smart Redact, which finds the sensitive information for you. The second one sends your text to Foxit's service to do it. Omit runs the same kind of detection on your own machine.

When Foxit PDF Editor is the better choice

Foxit is a capable PDF editor and Smart Redact is a serious feature, not a checkbox: automatic detection with a cloud model behind it will often beat a local one on raw accuracy. It also offers a perpetual licence, so the usual subscription argument does not separate us. The one thing it cannot offer is detection that never leaves your machine, and if your document is a patient note or a privileged file, that is the only row that matters.

Switching to Omit

If you use Foxit for editing, keep it. Run Omit over the file first where the content cannot be sent anywhere, then edit the redacted output in Foxit. Omit writes a separate output file, so your original stays as it is.

What we checked, and where it came from

Plans and prices were read from Foxit's own pricing page, and the processing model from Foxit's own Smart Redact security and privacy page, both on the date shown. We went to the primary source deliberately: third-party summaries describe Smart Redact as uploading documents, which is accurate for Foxit's Server product and not for the PDF Editor plugin.

Verified 17 September 2026.

Automatic redaction sits in the higher plan, manual redaction in the base one

Foxit lists manual redaction under PDF Editor at 129.99 US dollars per user a year, and Smart Redact under PDF Editor+ at 159.99. A one-time purchase of PDF Editor 14 is offered at 209.99 US dollars per user, so a perpetual licence is genuinely available.

The plugin keeps the file local and sends the text

Foxit's own security page states that text extraction happens locally on the user's device and the extracted text, including text read from scans by OCR, is then sent to its service for AI analysis, using Azure AI Language Service and an internal multi-model system hosted on AWS. Original and intermediate documents are deleted once the task completes. This is a reasonable design, honestly documented. It is still content leaving the machine.

Omit's equivalent runs with the network off

Omit's detection runs in a bundled local engine, so the same automatic PII pass happens with no service behind it and nothing metered. You can verify it on a network-isolated machine and it behaves identically, which is the one claim this comparison actually turns on.

How Omit is built

Choose Omit when

Choose Omit Redact when the content genuinely cannot leave the device, when you do not want automatic redaction metered per document, or when you need the same policy over spreadsheets and images as well as PDFs.

Choose Foxit PDF Editor when

Choose Foxit if you need a full PDF editor, if you want the accuracy of a larger cloud model and are comfortable with extracted text leaving the machine, or if its document inspection and editing tooling matters more to you than local-only processing.

Questions people ask

Does Foxit's Smart Redact upload my document?

For the PDF Editor plugin, Foxit states that text extraction happens locally on your device and the extracted text is then sent to its service for analysis. So the file itself may stay put while its contents do not. That includes text read from scanned pages by OCR, so the content of an image-only page goes out too. Foxit's separate Smart Redact Server product does fetch whole documents onto its server.

Is Foxit's automatic detection better than Omit's?

On raw accuracy it may well be, because it runs larger models than anything that fits on a laptop with no network. That is the trade being made. Omit's position is not that local detection is more accurate, it is that local detection is the only kind that keeps the content on your machine, and that our measured accuracy is good enough to be worth that.

Does Foxit have a perpetual licence like Omit?

Yes. Foxit lists a one-time purchase of PDF Editor 14 at 209.99 US dollars per user, alongside its annual plans. Licensing model is a genuine tie, so we do not claim it as a difference.

Is Smart Redact limited by volume?

Yes. Smart Redact is metered per document, with an allowance on the PDF Editor+ plan and paid upgrades above it. Omit's detection runs locally, so there is no per-document count to spend.
