The installed size is larger than the download because an installer is compressed.

Take the offline installer unless the download size is a real problem. It is the only one that is offline from the first minute, and the only one that can ever run the Accuracy tier. If you came here for Protect alone and you work in English, the light installer is the smaller, sensible pick.

Redaction is comfortable on 8 GB. The Accuracy tier is heavier than the Fast one but still sits inside that budget on a normal desktop.

Present on nearly every machine

Windows 11 ships it, and Windows 10 received it through Edge updates. If it is genuinely missing, the installer says so and offers to fetch it from Microsoft, which is the one step that touches the network.

Network

None, at any point after install

No account, no activation call, no update polling, no telemetry endpoint. A light install fetching one of the six extra languages is the single exception, and it is a choice you make rather than something that happens to you.

The interface5 languages

English, German, Spanish, French and Italian, switchable in Settings. It opens in English. Both installers carry all five and neither has to download anything to get them. It is not finished: about 45 of the 394 interface strings, roughly one in nine, are still English in the four other locales, mostly in the vault screens, the re-identify flow and the hints explaining the detection modes.

Names, places, organisations7 languages

English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch. These are the languages that load a full model, so a person or a company is recognised from the sentence around it. Detection is wider than the interface on purpose: the documents people redact are wider than the interfaces they are comfortable reading.

IDs, IBANs, cards, emailsAny language

Structured detectors for 31 countries, matched by pattern and checksum, so the language of the document is irrelevant to them. This is the layer that keeps working outside the seven. What you lose out there is the model that finds names, not this.

The practical version: in those seven languages you get everything. In an eighth you get every structured identifier and none of the names. For a sheet of account numbers that costs you nothing. For a file full of personal names it costs you a great deal, so run one of your own documents through the beta before you rely on it.

A fresh install is inert

No login task, no clipboard hook, no reading of other applications. Protect ships disabled, and turning it on is the deliberate act that arms it.

One shared engine

The detection engine, the language models and the OCR install once and are shared by every Omit app you own. That is why the first install is the large one and the rest are small.

Nothing runs in the background

There is no service, no scheduled task and no auto-updater sitting resident. The app runs when you open it, and Protect runs only if you switch it on.

Air-gapped rollouts are supported

With the offline installer, the only install-time network dependency is the WebView2 runtime on machines that lack it. IT can preinstall Microsoft's standalone runtime once, machine-wide, and the install is then fully offline.

Before you install

Which installer should I take?

The offline one, unless the size is a real problem. It carries all seven detection languages and the Accuracy tier, so the app never has a reason to open a socket. The light installer is 167 MB and gives you the Fast tier with English, and it can fetch the other six languages from inside the app. What it cannot do, ever, is get the Accuracy tier.

How much disk space does it actually use?

More than the download, because an installer is compressed. A full offline install settles at about 1.5 GB, and a light install at about 517 MB. The bulk of it is the detection engine and the language models, and every Omit app you install later shares that same bundle rather than adding its own copy.

Can the light installer download the Accuracy tier later?

No. It is bundled or it is absent, and the light installer does not bundle it. A packaged build refuses the download outright rather than half-installing something, so you will see a clear message rather than a stuck progress bar. Choosing the light installer to save around 760 MB means choosing the Fast tier permanently, which is why it is on this page in full size rather than in a footnote.

What languages does it work in?

Two different lists, and it is worth keeping them apart. The interface runs in five languages: English, German, Spanish, French and Italian, switchable in Settings. Detection covers seven: those five plus Portuguese and Dutch. Detection is the wider list on purpose, because the documents people redact are wider than the interfaces they are comfortable reading.

What if my document is in some other language?

Structured detectors still work, because most of what makes a document sensitive is not really written in a language. IBANs, card numbers, emails, VAT numbers, passport and tax numbers are matched by pattern and checksum, across detectors for 31 countries, so they are found whatever the document is written in. What you lose outside the seven is the model layer that recognises names, organisations and places from context. For a sheet of account numbers that costs you nothing. For a file full of personal names in an eighth language, assume we will miss them and test it before you rely on it.

Is the interface fully translated?

Not yet, and you should hear the number from us. About 45 of the 394 interface strings are still English in all four of the other locales, roughly one in nine, counted as every multi-word string byte-identical to the English one in all five files. They sit mostly in the vault screens, the re-identify flow and the hints explaining the detection modes. A further handful of single words, Edit and Cancel and Passphrase among them, are untranslated too and are not in that count. Everything else is translated, and the number only goes down.

Is there a macOS or Linux version?

Not yet on macOS, and not at all on Linux. The macOS build is in development and it is real work rather than a recompile, so we would rather not put a date on it. Windows is what you can install today.

Can I install it on a machine that has never been online?

Yes, with the offline installer, provided the WebView2 runtime is present, which it is on stock Windows 11 and on almost all Windows 10 installs. Everything after installation is local by construction: detection, redaction, licensing.

Will it change the files I run through it?

No. Omit writes a separate redacted copy next to the source and leaves the original byte for byte identical. That is a tested invariant rather than a promise.

Do I need a licence key to try it?

Protect is free permanently and needs no key. The rest of the app, file redaction and the vault and the Accuracy tier, runs on a 15-day trial and then wants a key. Pricing and the licence model are on the pricing page.
